Minecraft banner patterns: every pattern, what it needs, and how the loom works
All 43 banner patterns with the special items they need, the six-layer limit, and how to get a design with a single /give command.
Open the Banner GeneratorStack up to 6 patterns, preview it, copy the loom recipe or the /give command.Banners are built in a loom: banner + dye, optionally + a pattern item. Each pass adds one layer on top of the last, up to six in survival. Order matters — later layers paint over earlier ones.
Patterns that need a special item
| Pattern | Item at the loom |
|---|---|
| Creeper charge | Creeper head |
| Skull charge | Wither skeleton skull |
| Flower charge | Oxeye daisy |
| Thing (the Mojang logo) | Enchanted golden apple |
| Globe | Globe banner pattern (cartographer villager) |
| Snout | Snout banner pattern (bastion remnants) |
| Flow | Flow banner pattern (trial chambers) |
| Guster | Guster banner pattern (trial chambers) |
The first four are consumed by the loom; the last four are pattern items that you keep.
Everything else is free
Stripes, halves, corners, triangles, saw-teeth, circle, lozenge, border, curly border, bricks, gradients, crosses, and the diagonals — 35 patterns that only need a dye.
Getting the design by command
On Java, a banner with patterns can be given directly. Since 1.20.5 the command uses components:
/give @p minecraft:white_banner[banner_patterns=[{pattern:"minecraft:stripe_downright",color:"red"}]]
Older versions (1.13–1.20.4) use NBT with short codes:
/give @p minecraft:white_banner{BlockEntityTag:{Patterns:[{Pattern:"drs",Color:14}]}}
Commands allow up to 16 layers. Bedrock doesn’t support this — use the loom recipe the generator prints.
Design tips
- High contrast between base and the first layer, then use later layers for detail.
- The Border and Curly border patterns tidy up almost any design as the last layer.
- Two stripes in different directions plus a circle is the classic “shield” look.
