Rules of thumb for skins: keep 4–6 colours per outfit; shadows should shift towards blue/purple and highlights towards yellow; give skin, hair, top and bottom clearly different values (brightness) so the silhouette reads from far away.

About the Skin Color Palette

Good Minecraft skin color palettes are mostly good shade choices. Drop a skin to extract its palette (with percentages), or pick a base colour and get a shade ramp with the pixel-art hue-shift trick, a matching skin-tone and hair pairing, complementary and analogous outfit sets, triadic cartoon sets and metal accents — then see them painted onto a demo character in 3D. Export as PNG strip, hex list, or a .gpl palette for Aseprite and GIMP.

Frequently asked

What is hue-shifting?

Shadows drift towards blue/purple and highlights towards yellow instead of just getting darker or lighter. It makes tiny pixel art read as 3D. The "Hue-shift the shades" toggle does it for you.
